Storyline

Evan Goldman uproots his life from New York City to rural Indiana after his parents split. As his 13th birthday approaches, he must navigate the intricate social dynamics of his new school and make a good impression with his Bar Mitzvah celebration. After his parents’ separation, Evan Goldman (Eli Golden), age 12, and his mom Jessica move out of New York City (Debra Messing). Evan is heartbroken since his Bar Mitzvah is right around the corner and he has to say goodbye to his friends, his father (Peter Hermann), and his rabbi (Josh Peck). However, when visiting his grandmother (Rhea Perlman) in Walkerton, Indiana, he comes up with a scheme to make his Bar Mitzvah the most epic bash ever in an effort to meet new people and make new friends.

Evan, a new student at a new school, realizes that he is not the only one experiencing the common worries of eighth graders. Popular cheerleader Lucy (Frankie McNellis) desperately plots to stave off the first kiss between her crush Brett (JD McCrary) and best friend Kendra (Alyssa Diaz), while his new friends Patrice (Gabriella Uhl) and Archie (Jonathan Lengel) worry about the fate of the planet and unrequited love, respectively (Lindsey Blackwell). The situation is exacerbated since Evan has invited all of the popular kids to his party, many of whom are not fans of Patrice. Evan has to try to encourage everyone to put aside their differences in order to enjoy himself at his party, but he threatens social ruin if he fails to do so.
